JAKARTA (AFP) — Indonesia will next month host the first-ever "Asian Idol" show, a spin-off of its American cousin, a spokeswoman for the show said.
Contestants from Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam would vie for the title of Asian Idol, Teges Prita Soraya said.
Three shows will be broadcast to all six countries, where viewers will be able to vote for their favourite by text message.
To prevent viewers from voting along purely patriotic lines, each will have to choose two performers.
"If the voter were to chose only one contestant, they would choose their fellow countryman and it would benefit the country with the biggest population," she said.
The winner will be announced on December 16.
