Raymond Gutierrez impresses 'American Idol' host Ryan Seacrest

MANILA, Philippines – "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest was impressed with the hosting style of his Pinoy counterpart, Raymond Gutierrez.

This was revealed in GMA's entertainment program "Showbiz Central" on Sunday.

According to the report, of the many hosts in "Idol" franchises worldwide, Gutierrez was the one who caught his attention.

According to a witness abroad, Seacrest did a plug last week for "American Idol" using the "Pinoy Idol" introduction. The account said Seacrest ran the soundbite several times.

Another witness, who heard Seacrest's kind words to Gutierrez, said the host even wanted to copy Gutierrez's hosting style. The report said Seacrest planned to introduce "American Idol" the way Gutierrez introduced "Pinoy Idol."

Gutierrez was flattered by the Seacrest's words.

Getting high on Dinagyang

Iloilo City — With its slogan On Higher Ground, this year’s Dinagyang Festival ended on a happy note. Local and foreign tourists who flocked to this western part of the Visayas are still “feeling high” from the various activities held in celebration of the feast of Sto. NiƱo. Ilonggos, too, enjoyed the fanfare including GMA’s free show dubbed as Dinagyang Kapuso Night that drew an enormous crowd at the Freedom Grandstand.

Local artists like Pinoy Idol finalist and true-blue Ilongga Sue Ellen, Istayl Naton! hosts Angelia Ong, John Arceo, Mamo Monyika and Dino Vasquez entertained the crowd with song numbers and antics that added glee to the night.

Back stage, Sue Ellen relates that she has now fully recovered from the heavy blow that struck her and her family. She considers the flood waters and fire incidents — that left them homeless months ago — as part of “those trying times.”

“Since the lot is not originally ours, we decided to rent an apartment instead,” says Sue, who returned to Iloilo and continues her studies at Central Philippine University taking up Education after her Pinoy Idol stint.

“Life is much easier here but I still perform in Manila once in a while. I did a show with Ogie Alcasid (and Ramiele Malubay) last month,” she continues. “And of course, I sing on occasion like this as a Kapuso. But more often, I sing here with the church ministry. I really enjoy singing.” So does the crowd who applauded her energetic number Please Don’t Stop the Music.

Various games made every Kapuso’s spirit soar high. And as the night grew livelier, rain started to fall heavily, yet it was not enough to spoil the evening fun and excitement.

All — young and old — stood still, seemingly unmindful of any health problem the rain may bring. They shrieked in excitement, stomped their feet with joy and clapped their hands the hardest when Luna Mystika stars Heart Evangelista and Mark Anthony Fernandez appeared and performed one after the other on the makeshift wooden stage.

“This happens rarely (to see celebrities in person) so we might as well enjoy the moment even if it’s raining,” an Ilonggo fan says.

Mark, while singing Nandito Ako under a wide umbrella, gave away shirts to the jampacked crowd.

“Ayos ba kayo diyan?,” he asked with concern. The audience, in turn, responded with delight.

It was Mark’s third time to join Dinagyang. This time, Mark thanked everyone for the warm welcome and invited the audience to continue supporting Kapuso shows especially Luna Mystika where he plays Dexter, the love interest of Heart’s Celestina.

Heart, on the other hand, was touched to see Ilonggos soaking wet all throughout the show. She greeted them pleasantly and belted out a song accompanied by a band. The heavy downpour also didn’t stop her from going up on stage even if she has just recovered from sickness. Heart, too, at one point, tried to keep the umbrella away to interact well with the crowd but failed because she might be electrocuted from the microphone she was holding.

“I’m so happy to be here. Thank you for all the support and please don’t fail to watch Luna Mystika,” Heart says.

As the Kapuso Night ended, happiness vividly reflected on everybody’s faces. The Ilonggos’ warm welcome, in turn, conveyed a feeling as intense as the pounding of the drums we often hear come Dinagyang time.

Not trying to be Seacrest

“Pinoy Idol” host Raymond Gutierrez is not trying to be a clone of his “American Idol” counterpart.

That’s not to say he has found nothing to emulate in Ryan Seacrest.

“If there’s one thing I appreciate about him, it’s that, on AI, it’s as if he isn’t there,” Raymond told Inquirer Entertainment during “Pinoy Idol’s” auditions in Cebu recently. “He just pops in and out at the right moments. Contestants and viewers are very comfortable with him.”

He would like to do it that way, too, Raymond said. Looks like he’s succeeding in this department. Already, he’s been photographed and filmed with aspirants and program crew alike, fully enjoying himself.

“I try to understand how the contestants fee—I see it immediately if they’re sad, or just nervous,” the eager host said.

Gold rush in the city

MANILA, Philippines—In droves they came. For the Manila leg of the “Pinoy Idol” tryouts, the GMA 7 staff was again pleasantly “surprised” by the turnout.

“It’s more than double the Cebu crowd,” program manager Hazel Abonita said. Cebu had peaked at 1,500; the three-day Manila audition, held at the SMX Convention Center in the Mall of Asia compound, attracted 10,000 on the first day, Thursday.

“SM made that crowd estimate,” Abonita said. “We expect double that figure on the second day.”

While chatting with judge Ogie Alcasid, Fotini Paraskakis, senior executive producer of franchise holder FremantleMedia, quipped: “The Philippines has a lot of wonderful singers.”

Segment producer David Baki recalled that long queues stretched from the hall to the Manila Bay on day one.

“People started lining up at 6 a.m.,” Baki recounted. “We had to end registration at 9 p.m. But most of the staff finished work at 10 to 11:30 p.m.”

Voice, looks and a good story win ‘Idol’ slots

CEBU CITY, Philippines—One thing that the production staff of GMA 7’s “Pinoy Idol” has confirmed after four weeks of auditions all over the country: Filipinos are among the most respectful people in the world.

Even after enduring a barrage of vitriolic comments from the judges—specifically Wyngard Tracy—almost all of the rejected aspirants would invariably end the encounter with a smile and a “Salamat po” or “Thank you sir/ma’am.”

This observation was related to Inquirer Entertainment by Tracy himself, as well as Perry Lansigan, executive producer of the local version of the world-famous reality talent contest.

Tracy noted, “On ‘American Idol,’ we often see the rejects curse, or insult, the judges. That has not happened to us … so far.” (Cebu was the fourth stop.)

Not that they’d been dodging it.

Method in the madness

CEBU CITY, Philippines—The fourth stop in the search for GMA 7’s first “Pinoy Idol” took an 80-man production contingent to this Queen City of the South.

Host Raymond Gutierrez pointed out to Inquirer Entertainment that this Visayan island had produced “great singers,” among them Pilita Corrales, Dulce and Verni Varga.

Still, Perry Lansigan, executive producer, was “surprised” by the turnout. Long lines of starry-eyed aspirants gathered in SM Cebu on the first two days of the three-day tryouts which wrapped up Saturday last weekend.

Largest so far

“This is the largest crowd we’ve had so far,” Lansigan said. (Previous stops were Cagayan de Oro, Batangas and Iloilo.)

On Thursday, program manager Hazel Abonita estimated they would be seeing 1,400 to 1,500 contestants. “We have to extend pre-casting (screening) to accommodate everyone.”

Mercifully, Abonita noted, the “Idol” audition process had been fine-tuned by FremantleMedia, franchise holder of the world-famous reality show.

There’s now a little method in the madness.

Abonita explained: “Freemantle provided us with a computer software that was developed in Indonesia. With this program, all levels of the entire audition process are linked through the computers in each work station.”

“If a production staffer wanted to verify the background story of a specific contestant, all they have to do is check their laptops,” Abonita said.

JOLINA CHOSEN AS ONE OF PINOY IDOL JUDGES

Multi-awarded singer-actress and multi-media icon JOLINA MAGDANGAL was recently chosen as one of the judges of Pinoy Idol, a reality talent search TV program. It is the Philippine counterpart of the Amecican Idol. Jolina was ecstatic when she was told that she was chosen. Asked how she feels about it, she said “my achievements and my years of experience and training are finally recognized”. It is a known fact in the industry that she started her career when she was 11 years old passing from one audition to another, having trained by topnotch mentors in music, dance and acting. She has proven her worth many times and finally became one of the well-loved and respected celebrities of her time.

Jolina said she had no knowledge that GMA Network executives presented her profile and credentials along with numerous personalities to the FremantleMedia in London for evaluation and approval. She completes the three slots for the judges, two of whom are singer-songwriter and hit-maker OGIE ALCASID and top caliber talent manager and show producer WYNGARD TRACY. GMA Network execs say that credibility of the three judges based on their impressive credentials was the prime consideration of franchise holder FremantleMedia. Jolina added that “my years of experience and training as a total performer will be my basis for accepting or declining prospective finalists”. “The candidates must possess not only an excellent singing voice and style but also charm and a total personality, deserving to be called a true-blue Pinoy Idol” she quipped. Hosting the show is RAYMOND GUTIERREZ who recently won the Best Host Award together with Jolina.

The production team and the judges are now holding auditions in key cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Selected candidates shall converge in Manila to undergo workshops and different levels of elimination. Airing of the episodes will commence in April and last until August wherein the ultimate winner is chosen.

Jolina added that, in spite of the heavy responsibility and high expectations that rest on her shoulders, she is much honored by her choice as one of the judges. The constant travels, numerous activities and the demands of the show adds up to her already hectic schedule. She is currently the host of The Working President, a weekly news magazine TV program of the Philippine president. She also co-hosts and performs in GMA’s number one daily morning show Unang Hirit and Sunday noontime musical show SOP. She has to drop her upcoming drama show so she can attend to all of her commitments.

She is scheduled to do shows in San Jose and Oxnard, California on the third week of February. She will also start with the shooting of her movie in Europe by the second quarter of this year. Multi-media commercials are already underway including her choice as Ebay.ph style ambassador. Concerts nationwide and overseas are also scheduled throughout the year.

With her killer sked, Jolina still manages to attend to her fashion business and her new hobby in photography. The eternally young celebrity never runs out of energy and surprises. Who knows how many aces are still up her sleeves.

Here come the judges

MANILA, Philippines—During the first round of auditions for GMA 7’s “Pinoy Idol” in Cagayan de Oro last week, Jolina Magdangal cried, Ogie Alcasid picked up a slew of lessons, and Wyngard Tracy realized that he would soon become the most hated man in the country.

Jolina, Ogie and Wyngard are the judges in the local version of the world-famous reality talent search from FremantleMedia.

In an exclusive interview, Wilma Galvante, GMA 7 senior VP for Entertainment TV, pointed out that the judges’ “two-pronged” role was very important: “They tell the contestant whether they’re good or not, and they influence the viewers’ vote.”

Credibility

For this reason, Fremantle had put a premium on credibility in choosing the three jurors from a list presented by the Kapuso network.

Another crucial consideration was whether prospective judges were willing to devote the next eight months to “Idol,” which premieres in April and wraps up in August.

“I wanted [singer] Regine Velasquez to be a judge, but she’s doing a series of concerts in the US,” Galvante said. “Jolina gave up an afternoon soap.”

The final Idol trio is a motley crew," Galvante pointed out.

“As an artist and record promoter, Wyngard represents the business side of the industry,” Galvante explained. “As singer-songwriter-producer, Ogie recognizes talent.”

Galvante predicted that Magdangal, as the “voice of youth,” would be a revelation. “She’s spunky. [And] kids look up to her. Hopefully, they will listen if she says singing is not for them.”

Surprise

Tracy agreed with Galvante: “I still regarded her as the teenybopper from ‘Ang TV,’ but she surprised me in Cagayan de Oro.”

Magdangal herself said that she made sure she’d speak her mind, that she would not to be swayed by her fellow jurors. “I shouldn’t feel intimidated, though Wyngard and Ogie are more experienced than I am.”

Alcasid has his own fearless forecast: “Wyngard will steal the show.”

“That’s because he’s very straightforward,” Galvante said.

“I try my best to be tactful,” Tracy admitted, “but that’s not me.”

If Tracy is being cast as the local version of Simon “Mr. Nasty” Cowell and Magdangal as perky cheerleader Paula Abdul, Alcasid acknowledged that he could very well end up as Dog Pound King Randy Jackson.

“But the Fremantle consultants urged us not to portray any role... and just be ourselves,” Alcasid said.

“I don’t want to imitate anyone,” Magdangal concurred.

According to Galvante, Fremantle consultant Bob Cousins sat down with the trio, along with host Raymond Gutierrez, prior to the Cagayan de Oro auditions, to expound on the “Idol” production bible.

“I’ve always been brutally honest,” Tracy stated. “If I express an opinion, I stand by it no matter what.”

“It’s not an easy job. After the 60th time I said no [to a contestant], I felt drained,” Alcasid admitted.

“We saw about a hundred aspirants in Cagayan de Oro,” Tracy recounted. “On the first day, we started at 1 p.m. and ended at 1 a.m.”

“But it’s a great learning experience,” Alcasid said. “I’m here [as judge] not just because I’m an expert … I’m also here to learn from my fellow judges and from the contestants as well.”

Tearful scene

Magdangal was reduced to tears in Cagayan de Oro.

“A girl came in with her mom, who was walking with a cane,” Magdangal recalled. “I suddenly remembered my own audition for [Ryan Cayabyab’s youth group] 14K when I was 11. I went through the same thing. I also started from scratch.”

Next stop for the “Idol” team is Batangas this week; Iloilo, next week; and then Cebu, Davao, Metro Manila, Dagupan, Clark, and Naga in succeeding weeks.

Raymond G as Host on Pinoy Idol?

Now It looks like its official. Raymond G will no doubt Host Pinoy Idol. hmm...

Honestly I really dont know why GMA chose Raymond G over Drew and Mo Twister. I mean com'on dont tell me Raymond is better than those 2. I mean have you seen Mo and Drew host? Im quite sure it would be a very interesting show if that will happen. Actually during the Philippine Idol times the moment Mo became a special judge. The show became more interesting. Cos he was actually opposing MR C and Pilita's comments. It actually reminded me of Paula and Simon werein most of the time they dont agree. Honestly thats what we want and that why American Idol became popular. Actually that "strategy" is also used on most of the idol shows in the worldexcept here. hmm Lets imagine Jolina, Wyngard and Ogie doing that "strategy" hmmm nahhh I dont think they will do that. O well what can we do. Its already final. unless...

lets wait and see what will happen. Just wish GMA made the right decision. GOODLUCK GMA!!

‘Pinoy Idol’ rejects, raise your hands

MANILA, Philippines - An insider says Paolo Bediones was considered for GMA 7’s “Pinoy Idol” host slot, which went to Raymond Gutierrez.

The source says Bediones didn’t make it because the “Idol” bible, drafted by franchise holder Fremantle, fixes the host’s age at 30 below. Bediones confirmed this, saying he is now 33.

Double no

The same rule must have thrown out 37-year-old Songbird Regine Velasquez’s chances as PI host. Also, a Fremantle executive once told the Inquirer that singers were generally not even considered for the job, so as not to take attention away from the contestants.

Two Ryans

The two Ryans of ABC 5’s “Philippine Idol” last year have officially crossed over to the rival contest, “Pinoy Dream Academy” on ABS-CBN 2.

Former PI juror Ryan Cayabyab signed up as head master of PDA; and former PI emcee Ryan Agoncillo is now PDA main host.

Junked judges

Big-time celebs from the music industry purportedly sent feelers to GMA 7, expressing interest in the job of judge.
Among the rejects are a high-flying diva and three high-profile musical directors/composers.

Motherly jab

Lily Monteverde says she’s happy with Regal Films’ new female star, Marian Rivera, because she “can act.” Sounds like a not-so-subtle jab at Angel Locsin, who dumped the Regal/GMA Films camp for Star Cinema?

Goodbye, ‘Whammy’

Speaking of Bediones, the reason that he’s keen on “Idol” is because his game show, “Whammy,” ends this week.

“It’s supposed to run for only 16 weeks,” he said. “Rufa Mae (Quinto, co-host) and I had fun, though.”

“Whammy” will be replaced by a Koreanovela, according to a network insider.

Love rigodon

“Lino Cayetano has broken up with KC Concepcion because he wants to reunite with Bianca Gonzalez,” screams a tabloid headline.

Bianca was open about maintaining contact with Lino, though he was already involved with KC. But karma has a way of catching up on everyone. Unbeknownst to Bianca, says a source, Lino is pining for another girl who, like KC, is based in Europe.

Perhaps Bianca should relocate to Europe so that Lino would be, in her own words, “proud” of her. That was her main gripe, the reason she broke up with Lino in the first place.

A new team for ‘Pinoy Idol’

Wilma Galvante, a top GMA 7 exec, has confirmed that talent manager Wyngard Tracy, singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid and singer-actress Jolina Magdangal are the new judges of “Pinoy Idol.”

Galvante explained that credibility was the “primary consideration” in selecting the panel, which was approved by franchise holder FremantleMedia.

Raymond Gutierrez is the new host.

The new team is present in the first round of auditions in Cagayan de Oro, which wraps up today.

‘Idol’ talk

MANILA, Philippines—Auditions for GMA 7’s “Pinoy Idol” are ongoing. First stop is Cagayan de Oro. Identities of the judges and host were still under wraps at press time. But an unimpeachable source gave us a tip: Wyngard Tracy, Ogie Alcasid and Jolina Magdangal were almost surely the panel members, and that the host would either be Raymond Gutierrez or, from last year, Ryan Agoncillo. If Agoncillo isn’t renewed as host, we hear he is being eyed for the rival contest, “Pinoy Dream Academy,” on ABS-CBN 2.

Pinoy Idol Requirement

‘American Idol’ Season 7 on QTV

GET ready for another season of Americans and their attempt at three minutes of fame, ultra-powered belting, snide remarks from the judges, and of course… Simon Cowell.

On Jan. 16, QTV (surprise, surprise!) will be airing the seventh season of the highly syndicated singing competition, “American Idol,” at 6 p.m. This came as a surprise for some of the “Idol” fans here as past “AI” seasons were aired on ABC 5. This was probably a result of “Pinoy Idol” moving to GMA 7 after talks with FreemantleMedia, developer of the popular series.

During the first few episodes, viewers will be treated to state-wide auditions (admittedly the most entertaining and interesting part of the series). Those who pass the auditions will then be trimmed to 24, where they will be singing every week and every week there will be eliminations. When the number of contestants reaches 12, the competition begins to quicken its pace.

In the past few seasons, “AI” has produced quite a number of talents that have made a mark in the US music industry. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are both “AI” alumni and are both contest winners. But not only “AI” winners made it big in the music scene as runners-up were also not left behind. In fact, Chris Daughtry (a runner-up in Season 5) won in the 2007 American Music Awards for his breakout self-titled album Daughtry, while Clay Aiken (Season 2 runner-up) is also a constant fan favorite because of his sweet and soothing sound.

Sadly, “AI” has had its fair share of bad eggs in the dozen, particularly William Hung. Hung managed to release not just one, but four albums! Imagine that. Hung has a relatively large cult following, probably as a show of support to Hung in response to “AI’s” attacks and criticisms against the Cantonese-American university student.

So what’s in store for “AI” fans this year? According to the show’s official website, “AI” will be focusing more on the contestants this year. Compared to previous years where popular singers and music legends were featured every week, “AI” Season 7 will focus less on the contestants’ interactions with their mentors and more on the singing abilities of the talents. What’s more, fiery judge Simon Cowell also stressed that this season will have the best bunch of contestants yet: something that he means sincerely this time. “AI” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, in the show’s official website, said that he is keeping his fingers crossed for a Beatles night, but Paul McCartney will be a no-show (as a Beatles fan, I am deeply disappointed!).

Prior to the airing of the show, concerns were raised that the show will be sacked this year because it fared poorly in the ratings war last year and last season’s winner and runner-up were not really gaining a foothold in the music industry. But obviously these concerns were quelled immediately after fans heard that the show will be premiering in a couple of days.

Another important part of “AI” this year is “Idol Gives Back,” which will once again be featured this season. Last year’s “Idol Gives Back” earned rave reviews from Americans and people all over the world because of the help it gave to people in Africa and victims of Hurricane Katrina. This year, “Idol Gives Back” will once again extend a helping hand to people in need while playing beautiful music.

From “AI,” let’s go back to our local version of “Idol,” “Pinoy Idol.” I wrote an entry before about Mau Marcelo, the first “Pinoy Idol” winner. I was honestly surprised when I saw the “Pinoy Idol” TV commercial over at GMA 7, where the channel loudly proclaimed “Want to be the first ever Pinoy Idol?” (not verbatim). What struck me most was GMA 7’s claim that they will be producing the first ever Pinoy Idol when Marcelo, clearly the first Pinoy Idol, just competed in “Asian Idol” last year. “Pinoy Idol” will be opening its doors for second season auditions soon. Although I am hopeful that GMA 7 will be able to take care of the “Idol” winner better in terms of his or her music career, I wish that GMA 7 will also remember to correct their arrogant claim of producing the first ever “Pinoy Idol.”

Raymond Gutierrez to Host and Ogie Alcasid To Judge Pinoy Idol

Can I just say What the heck is GMA thinkin? I mean com'on RAYMOND GUTIERREZ? lols Is that the best they can do? What happened to what the viewers/fans like? I mean Drew Arellano and Mo Twister for example? based on the PEX polls Drew Arellano leads and as for Mo Twister he did great during the Philippine Idol Time. I mean WOW Raymond Gutierrez? HAHAHA Dont tell me he was chosen because of the most powerful Annabelle Rama. Com'on GMA we want Drew Arellano or Mo Twister!!! and as for Ogie Alcasid. I respect Ogie okay and Im definitely a huge fan of his but I dont think he's fit to this job. He can probably host but not judge? He already said that his not into criticizing people. I believe American Idol made it big because the judges were somewhat cruel and based on what we know about Ogie he's not like that. So in other words. wrong again GMA you've chosen the wrong people again!!

O well, based on Ed Arevalo's Blog here are the requirements:

What to bring:

1. Proof of age (certificate of birth, etc.)
2. Full body photo
3. Parental consent (for those of age 16 and 17)
4. and don’t forget to be on your best dress or get-up to impress

Goodluck Guys!!!

by the way I'll be posting the media here so bookmark this blog. thanks!!!
